Back in February, my lovely girlfriend and I left rainy, cold Portland in winter and visited her parents for a week in sunny Los Angeles.
Needless to say, I had a great time waking up and picking a fresh grapefruit off the tree outside our room each morning, and then painting on their patio in the sunshine. While on vacation, we took a daytrip down to Oceanside, CA, and I snapped this photo of a pelican on the pier.
I decided to paint him (or her) the next day. Luckily, I took a few photos of the process, and I’m posting it as a step by step painting guide.
First off, I grabbed a cheap paint board at Blick, and started drawing out the major lines of the bird and the landscape in pencil. Don’t get too heavy-handed. Just give yourself some lines to follow, like a kid and a coloring book.
